Biogas targeted to contribute RM20.2 billion to Malaysia’s bioeconomy by 2020.

Kuala Lumpur, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 – Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation (BiotechCorp) once again joined local and international industry giants in the Biogas Asia Pacific Forum 2015 to explore further strategies to develop and strengthen the biogas industry in Malaysia and the Asia Pacific region. Back for the 4th year, the forum is Asia’s premier networking event for the business of biogas and was held from 28 – 29 April 2015 at Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre, Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

The opening ceremony saw YB Datuk Dr Ewon Ebin, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) delivering his speech on the potential of biogas production in Malaysia, before officially launching the forum. “The biogas production and processing has set a high expectation for Malaysia to become the biogas hub in Asia and as the region’s lead biogas exporter to the global market,” he said. “In fact, the total potential market for the biogas industry in Malaysia is estimated to be RM 8.3 billion (USD 2.3 billion) by the year 2022, while the global biogas market is expected to reach RM120.1 billion (USD 33 billion) by the year 2022.”

Themed “Commercial Integration of the Biogas Value Chain in Asia – Opportunities and Challenges for All”, the 2-day conference focused on the updates and challenges of the commercialisation of biogas, such as feedstock management, anaerobic digestion and biogas upgrading, and attracted leading organisations including SIRIM, FELDA, Emirates Gas, and Indonesia Oil Palm Research & Institute. Highlights of the forum topics include “Malaysia as the Biogas Hub of Asia – Plugging All Stakeholders into the Biogas Roadmap”, “Building an Integrated Biogas Value Chain from Feedstock to Biogas Offtaker” and “Palm Oil Taking the Lead for Biogas Value Chain Creation in South East Asia.”

The event promotes partnerships and sharing of knowledge to drive innovation, growth, and commercialisation in the biogas sector, with the aim to position Malaysia as a biogas hub in the foreseeable future. With biotechnology acting as the game changer and value creator for the biogas industry, BiotechCorp is currently encouraging the commercial development of biogas in Malaysia through several initiatives and flagship projects, including those under the Bioeconomy Transformation Programme (BTP).

“As the nation moves towards adopting renewable energy and environmental sustainability, biogas will play a crucial role in driving Malaysia’s bioeconomy agenda forward, subsequently realising our aspirations in becoming a sustainable and developed nation,” said BiotechCorp’s Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Dr. Mohd. Dato’ Nazlee added that the Biogas Asia Pacific Forum 2015 acts as the perfect avenue to intensify Malaysia’s global visibility within the biogas sector, while raising awareness on its commercial opportunities to encourage participation of industry players and entrepreneurs in the bio-based industry.

According to the Project Director and BiotechCorp’s Senior Vice President of BioIndustrial En. Zainal Azman Abu Kasim, this year’s Biogas Pacific Forum drew around 400 participants from 27 countries including from Germany, Netherlands, Indonesia and Vietnam, with a majority representing the palm oil mills sector. The event also attracted government agencies and ministries to increase coordination and cooperation between Asia Pacific’s various policies and programmes to accelerate the biogas sector in the right direction.

The event also saw 4 exchanges of documents related to the development of biogas initiatives in Malaysia, as witnessed by Datuk Dr Ewon Ebin, YB. Putrajaya, 16 April 2015 – INOVASI SOSIAL MOSTI atau MOSTI SOCIAL INNOVATION (MSI) yang berteraskan program jangkau luar (outreach) ke peringkat akar umbi telah dilancarkan pada hari ini oleh YB Datuk Dr. Ewon Ebin, Menteri Sains, Teknologi dan Inovasi. MSI meliputi pembangunan atau pelaksanaan idea samada yang berbentuk produk, perkhidmatan atau model bagi memenuhi keperluan sosial (meeting unmet social needs).

“MSI merupakan salah satu cabang inovasi yang boleh membawa kesan secara langsung dan boleh dirasai oleh rakyat, bukan sahaja akan memberi manfaat kepada masyarakat tetapi juga meningkatkan keupayaaan individu untuk bertindak melalui jaringan kerjasama pelbagai pihak,” kata YB Datuk Dr. Ewon Ebin semasa melancarkan Karnival Creativity & Science4U Zon Tengah di Putrajaya hari ini.

“Mulai tahun ini, skop dana R,D&C yang diurus oleh MOSTI akan diperluas untuk meliputi inovasi sosial. MOSTI telah bercadang untuk memperuntuk (set aside) sehingga (up to) RM20 juta daripada jumlah dana R,D&C yang telah diluluskan,” tambah Datuk Dr. Ewon Ebin lagi.

Pada permulaan pelaksanaan MSI akan melibatkan :
i. program outreach ke peringkat akar umbi (grassroot) seperti Jejak Inovasi MOSTI-YIM bersama pelajar, NGOs, komuniti, kumpulan/pertubuhan wanita, etnik dan komuniti terpilih; serta
ii. mempertingkat (scaling-up) inovasi yang dijejaki supaya aplikasinya lebih meluas dan faedah sosialnya berganda (amplified).

Peringkat seterusnya, ialah Cabaran Inovasi Sosial (social innovation challenges) bagi mendapatkan cadangan idea/projek yang lebih berimpak tinggi yang sesuai dilaksanakan di bawah MSI.

Karnival Creativity & Science4U kali ini merupakan kali ke-3 pada tahun 2015, selepas diadakan di peringkat zon selatan, iaitu di Negeri Sembilan pada bulan Mac dan baru-baru ini di Pulau Pinang bagi zon utara. Program seterusnya akan diadakan bagi Zon Sabah Tambunan, Sabah pada 30 April – 1 Mei 2015, Zon Timur di Taman Tamaddun Islam, Kuala Terengganu pada 19 – 22 Ogos 2015 dan Zon Sarawak pada 20-22 September 2015, di Waterfront, Kuching, Sarawak.

Karnival Creativity & Science4U kali ini menyaksikan sebanyak 21 aktiviti menarik dijalankan seperti Cabaran Inovasi Inklusif 2015 anjuran Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia yang menawarkan hadiah wang tunai RM27,000 kepada inovator yang berjaya menampilkan Inovasi terbaik; Young Weather Forecast Talent anjuran Jabatan Mateorologi Malaysia yang mencungkil bakat baru di kalangan belia sebagai penyampai berita ramalan cuaca dan lain-lain lagi.

Kota Kinabalu, 20 April 2015 – Borneo’s premier biotechnology event BioBorneo 2015, themed “Bio-based technologies for wealth creation through the Bioeconomy”, served as a platform to disseminate information on current bioeconomy R&D efforts and related business potential, along with sharing on bioeconomic transformation programmes and implementation in Malaysia.
Organised by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI) and Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation (BiotechCorp) in collaboration with the Sabah Economic Development and Investment Authority (SEDIA) and Sabah Biodiversity Centre (SABC), was launched by the Deputy Chief Minister of Sabah YAB Datuk Seri Panglima Hj. Yahya Hussin, the Deputy Chief Minister & Minister of Food and Industry, at Kota Kinabalu’s Sutera Harbour Resort today.
The two-day event was also graced by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Dr Ewon Ebin, BiotechCorp CEO Dato’ Dr. Mohd Nazlee Kamal, CEO/President of SEDIA Datuk Dr. Mohd Yaakob Haji Johari and Director SABC, Dr. Abdul Fatah Haji Amir. The inaugural BioBorneo was held in Sarawak in 2012.
In his speech, the Deputy Chief Minister of Sabah, YAB Datuk Seri Panglima Hj. Yahya Hussin, said Sabah offers tremendous potential to the wealth creation through Bioeconomy as the state is rich with biodiversity and natural resources. The state has already embarked on various bioeconomic endeavors in agriculture, biomedical and bio-industrial sectors.
“Sabah holds enormous opportunities in bio-based economy. The Sabah Development Corporation (SDC) has taken into account and have listed strategies for the action plans on Sabah Biotechnology. The main initiatives under SDC include Sabah Agro-Industrial Precinct (SAIP), Palm Oil Industrial Cluster (POIC), Keningau Integrated Lifestock Centre (KILC) dan Marine Integrated Cluster”.
Dr Ewon Ebin, Minister of Science, Technology & Innovation said, “Sabah possesses a vast potential in the biotechnology field. The biotechnology application process for genetic sources in Borneo offers remarkable potential for the process of wealth creation in Sabah. This could spur sources for new growth and for Malaysia to be a global biotechnology hub.”
He added that BioBorneo 2015 is part of the government’s transformation programme through the Bioeconomy initiative that also aims to enable all states to share in the nation’s successes and wealth. BTP will greatly impact and benefit Sabah by merging diverse bioeconomy initiatives that tap into the bountiful resources of this land. Such efforts will generate a dynamic bioeconomic movement as well as retain Sabah’s mega biodiversity heritage. BioBorneo 2015 focuses on the biotechnology development and innovation potentials of the East Malaysia states through trigger projects of the BTP.
Dato’ Dr Mohd Nazlee Kamal, Chief Executive Officer of BiotechCorp, noted that 16 of the current 253 BioNexus Status companies are located in Sabah and Sarawak, which have the potential to contribute to the nation’s demand of highly skilled knowledge workers. “Collectively, the BioNexus Status companies based in Sabah and Sarawak have approved investments of over RM12 billion. This shows the high potential of biodiversity in Borneo to spur new sources of growth of the Malaysian economy,” he added.

Putrajaya, 14 April 2015 – Rekabentuk menarik dan unik memberi nilai tambah kepada sesuatu produk dan akan membezakannya dengan produk yang lain. Dengan menyuntik elemen inovasi ke dalam sesuatu rekaan akan meningkatkan daya saing produk ke pasaran global.

Berucap di Majlis Penyampaian Malaysia Good Design Mark (MGDM) 2014, YB Datuk Dr. Ewon Ebin, Menteri Sains, Teknologi dan Inovasi menggesa sektor perindustrian tempatan untuk memacu kejayaan melalui aktiviti penyelidikan dan pembangunan produk dengan rekabentuk yang lebih kreatif dan inovatif.

“Bagi produk yang memiliki fungsi teknologi, kualiti dan harga yang hampir sama, rekabentuklah yang menjadi penentu sama ada ia akan diterima atau popular di kalangan pengguna” tambahnya lagi.

Sebanyak 48 produk daripada 29 syarikat diberi pengiktirafan dalam MGDM 2014 kerana menepati standard penilaian rekabentuk yang telah ditetapkan. Pengiktirafan ini adalah bagi memperakui usaha sektor perindustrian dalam melaksanakan program penyelidikan dan pembangunan berterusan untuk meningkatkan kualiti produk.

Sementara itu, YBhg Prof. Dato’ Dr Ahmad Haji Zainuddin, Pengerusi Majlis Rekabentuk Malaysia (MRM) turut memaklumkan bahawa MRM akan meneruskan anjakan paradigma sektor perindustrian tempatan dengan berusaha memperkenalkan inisiatif berkaitan bagi membantu produk keluaran tempatan terus menempa nama dan setanding di peringkat antarabangsa.

PETALING JAYA, 7 April 2015 – The WMO GURME (World Meteorological Organization’s Global Atmosphere Watch Urban Research Meteorology and Environment) Regional Workshop in South East Asia was officiated today by YB. Datuk Dr. Ewon Ebin, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation. GURME is a project established as a means to help enhance the capabilities of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) to handle meteorological and related aspects of urban pollution.

The goals of GURME are to enhance the capabilities of NMHSs in providing urban-environmental forecasting and in providing air quality services of high quality, illustrating the linkages between meteorology and air quality. GURME is also in collaboration with other WMO programmes, WHO and environmental agencies, to better define meteorological and air quality measurements focusing specifically on those that support urban forecasting. In addition, GURME also provides NMHSs with easy access to information on measurement and modeling techniques and also promoting a series of pilot projects to demonstrate how NMHSs can successfully expand their activities into urban environment issues, showcasing new technologies at appropriate conferences and develop illustrative example.

“The objective of this workshop is to educate the participants from ASEAN countries about the roles of meteorology in the formation, transportation and distribution of air pollutants in the atmosphere in urban areas”, said YB Datuk Ewon Ebin.
The workshop also provided a platform for experience and knowledge sharing among participants and resource persons in air quality forecasting in urban areas and identifying suitable system that can be used and also enhance the air quality forecasting operation within the country and increase international collaboration in air quality research activities.
The GURME workshop was attended by participants from Southeast Asia country: Indonesia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand apart from the local delegates.
Concurrently MetMalaysia have also signed an MOU with Universiti Malaya that will further strengthen the collaboration between the two parties. The focus is to attain the WMO-GAW Contributor status for the university’s Institute of Ocean and Earth Science Station (IOES) in Bachok, Kelantan. The Bachok IOES station is currently capable to make all the aerosols, ozone, reactive and greenhouse gases measurements as per monitoring requirements.
Also present at the ceremony were YBhg. Dr Zulkifli Mohamed Hashim, Deputy Secretary General (Science of MOSTI), Professor Gregory Carmichael Chair WMO GAW Science Steering Committee, Professor Alexander Baklanov WMO representative, Professor Dr. Awang Bulgiba Awang Mahmud Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and International) University Malaya, Director General of the Agency under MOSTI,and many others are also present at the ceremony.

4 April 2015, Kepala Batas, Pulau Pinang – Selaras dengan usaha untuk memantapkan fungsi dan peranannya selaku peneraju agenda STI negara, Kementerian Sains, Teknologi dan Inovasi (MOSTI) telah membentangkan Rang Undang-Undang Teknologis dan Juruteknik 2014 dan dipersetujui di Dewan Rakyat pada 2 April 2015 lalu. Rang Undang-undang ini akan dibentangkan semula di Dewan Negara dalam tempoh terdekat sebelum diluluskan menjadi Akta Teknologis dan Juruteknik 2014 yang akan memberi laluan kepada penubuhan Lembaga Teknologis Malaysia (MBOT). Penubuhan MBOT akan memberi pengiktirafan kepada kerjaya teknologis dan memperkasa pendidikan teknik dan latihan vokasional (TEVT).

“MBOT dijangka akan memberi peluang pengiktirafan kepada lebih kurang 400,000 graduan teknologi kejuruteraan yang bakal dihasilkan oleh Malaysia Technical University Network (MTUN) menjelang tahun 2020. Selain itu, seramai 400,000 lulusan politeknik akan turut mendapat peluang pengiktirafan. Bagi program kemahiran pula, lulusan Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (SKM) Tahap 3, Diploma Kemahiran Malaysia (DKM) dan Diploma Lanjutan Kemahiran Malaysia (DLKM) yang ditawarkan oleh 911 pusat bertauliah turut menikmati peluang yang sama. MBOT juga akan menjadi signatory dalam bidang teknologi dan teknikal yang berkaitan bagi memastikan teknologis serta juruteknik yang dihasilkan di negara ini menepati standard antarabangsa dan mampu bersaing di peringkat global”, demikian menurut YBhg. Dato’ Sri Dr. Noorul Ainur, Ketua Setiausaha Kementerian Sains, Teknologi dan Inovasi yang membacakan teks ucapan YB Menteri Sains, Teknologi dan Inovasi sempena Majlis Penutupan Karnival Creativity & Science4U Zon Utara di Kepala Batas, Pulau Pinang .

Putrajaya – Agensi Tenaga Atom Antarabangsa (IAEA) telah menaja 2 orang pelajar Malaysia untuk mengikuti Program “Nuclear School Experiments on Reactor Physics and Neutron Applications for Asia-Pacific Region” yang telah diadakan pada 30 Mac 2015 hingga 10 April 2015. 2 pelajar Malaysia ini adalah daripada 11 orang peserta daripada 7 Negara Asia Pasifik seperti Bangladesh, Kemboja, Indonesia, Iraq, Malaysia, Thailand dan Vietnam.

Program latihan ini merangkumi eksperimen yang dijalankan di BATAN, Indonesia yang memfokuskan kepada kejuruteraan reaktor dan juga eksperimen di Nuklear Malaysia yang berkaitan kejuruteraan reaktor dan aplikasi neutron sains di bawah tunjuk ajar pakar IAEA daripada Negara Republik Czech. Latihan ini adalah untuk memanfaatkan reaktor penyelidikan nuklear bagi tujuan pendidikan dan latihan dalam bidang kejuruteraan reaktor dan nuklear khasnya bagi Negara anggota IAEA di Asia Pasifik

YB Datuk Abu Bakar Mohamad Diah, Timbalan Menteri Sains, Teknologi dan Inovasi (MOSTI) berkata, En. Anas Muhamad Pauzi (UNITEN) dan Cik Edleen Amani Abd Halim (UKM) telah terpilih mengikuti program ini setelah memenangi pertandingan esei bertajuk “How is nuclear science and engineering can contribute to human civilization”. Pertandingan ini dibuka kepada mahasiswa universiti tempatan yang mengambil jurusan berkaitan sains dan kejuruteraan nuklear.

Tambah beliau lagi, ini merupakan program perintis yang menjadi asas bagi rancangan jangkamasa panjang menggunakan Reaktor TRIGA PUSPATI di Nuklear Malaysia untuk tujuan pendidikan dan latihan di peringkat Asia Pasifik. Aktiviti seperti ini akan dijadikan aktiviti tahunan bermula pada tahun 2015.

Bagi manfaat dalam negara, Reaktor TRIGA PUSPATI juga akan digunakan untuk amali eksperimen para pelajar tahun 3 kursus kejuruteraan nuklear dari UTM sebagai salah satu pengisian kurikulum mulai tahun 2015 ini dan bakal diteruskan bagi tahun-tahun akan datang.

PUTRAJAYA -Kementerian Sains, Teknologi dan Inovasi (MOSTI) menerusi Pusat Sains Negara (PSN) hari ini telah melancarkan PSN TROOPERZ yang merupakan sebuah pasukan bagi program jangkau luar (outreach) yang menjelajah ke seluruh Malaysia bagi menyemarakkan lagi pembudayaan sains, teknologi dan inovasi dalam kalangan masyarakat.

“PSN TROOPERZ adalah lambang komitmen kementerian dan agensi ini untuk membudayakan sains dan teknologi dengan menggunakan pendekatan yang mudah dan menyeronokkan bagi mencapai hasrat menarik minat masyarakat terhadap bidang sains dan teknologi”, kata YB Datuk Dr. Ewon Ebin, Menteri Sains, Teknologi dan Inovasi semasa melancarkan program ini.

Menerusi PSN TROOPERZ, pelbagai program telah diatur seperti program komuniti, program pelajar, program pendidik, program golongan kurang upaya, program orang asli dan program bersifat pertandingan yang berteraskan Science, Technology, Engineering, Art dan Mathematic (STEAM) yang akan menjelajah ke seluruh negara.
PSN TROOPERZ juga mendapat kerjasama rakan strategik dari Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia (KPM), Kementerian Tenaga, Teknologi Hijau dan Air (KeTTHA), Pusat Sains dan Kreativiti Terengganu (PSKT), Cetree Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) serta rakan swasta seperti Planetarium Melaka, Petrosains, SASBADI Sdn. Bhd., Sintok Robo Sdn. Bhd. dan MyRobot Sdn. Bhd.

Penjelajahan ini juga dianjurkan bersempena dengan penutupan sementara PSN. Penutupan itu telah bermula pada 20 Mac 2015 dan bakal berwajah baru menjelang November 2016. Penutupan ini adalah bertujuan untuk menjalankan kerja-kerja naiktaraf bangunan PSN bagi memberi keselesaan dan keseronokan berganda kepada pengunjung kelak.
