Introduction
The Industry Division was established on the 16th of December 2007. The division was set up to facilitate and coordinate the programmes and activities of agencies under the Industry Cluster following to the restructuring of the Ministry’s role and to strengthen Government delivery system. The Industry Cluster encompasses of Malaysian Nuclear Agency (Nuclear Malaysia), Department of Standards Malaysia (STANDARDS MALAYSIA), SIRIM Berhad, Malaysian Technology Development Corporation (MTDC), Malaysian Design Council (MRM) and Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB).
Objectives
- To develop relevant expertise in specialised technical areas as needed by the industry.
- To develop R&D and indigenous industrial technology in the prioritised areas of advanced material, advanced manufacturing, anotechnology, alternative energy and waste to wealth.
- To enhance the capability of technopreneurs to increase industrial competitiveness through technology transfer such as incubator facilities, technlogy licensing and technology acquisition which will firm up the capabilities of SMEs.
Functions
The division is responsible to formulate policies and undertake research and development (R&D) in the following focus areas:
- advanced material;
- advanced manufacturing;
- machinery & equipment;
- new materials;
- alternative energy; and
- waste to wealth
Plan and formulate policies related to industrial technology in the following prioritised areas i.e. advanced material, advanced manufacturing, nanotechnology, alternative energy, food production technology and waste to wealth;
Manage and monitor R&D project implementation awarded under ScienceFund, TechnoFund and InnoFund for the Industry Cluster;
Nurture small medium enterprises (SMEs) to become innovative technopreneurs (I-technopreneur) through consultation and incubator programmes;
Provide input for bilateral and multilateral trade cooperation (standard development, FTA, WTO, IMP3 and others);
Conduct technology scanning programmes through industry dialogue, offset cooperation programmes and brain gain for industrial development based on market and technology driven innovation; and
Administer application for overseas trip, coordinate and facilitate programmes of agencies under the Industry Cluster to be in line with MOSTI’s policies.

The establishment of Malaysian Nuclear Agency (Nuclear Malaysia) was mooted from idea of the then Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Ismail Dato’ Abdul Rahman, that Malaysia should play a role in the development of nuclear science and technology for peaceful purposes. The Cabinet officially approved the establishment of the Tun Ismail Atomic Research Centre (PUSPATI), under the Ministry of Science, Technology and the environment on 19 September 1972.
To reflect its vision, mission, objectives and activities in the challenging world, a new identity was established, and was officially named as Malaysian Nuclear Agency (Nuclear Malaysia) on 28 September 2006. Nuclear Malaysia, is strategically located nearby the government administration, centre Putrajaya, and Cyberjaya.

As the national standards development agency, SIRIM plays an active role in international standards development. We coordinate the countrys participation in international standardization activities, where Malaysia is a participating member in o6+ver 80 ISO Technical Committees and Subcommittees. SIRIM also acts as the local inspection agency for over 20 foreign certification bodies with regards to conformity assessment for Malaysian Exports.

Malaysia Technology Development Corporation (MTDC) was set up by the Government of Malaysia in 1992 to spearhead the development of technology businesses in Malaysia. Its initial role was to concentrate on the promotion and commercialisation of local research and invests in new ventures that can bring in new technologies from abroad. From those investment activities, MTDC has evolved to become a venture capital outfit and has been the leading venture capitalist in the country long before the concept became familiar and accepted in Malaysia.

The Director General of STANDARDS MALAYSIA reports to the Minister of Science, Technology and the Innovation through the Secretary General of the Ministry. |

Malaysian Design Council (MRM) role is to educate industries about the importance of of quality and the effectiveness of design management , in product development to compete in the global market.
MRM also is responsible to handle activities for local design product for promotion in the international stage.
MRM is a resource centre and refeerence in terms of design to help local industries to develop their own design capabilities.

Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) was formed after the Parliament passed the Radioactive Substances Act 1968. Due to rapid development of atomic energy activities in Malaysia which requires more effective control, inspection and enforcement, the Atomic Energy licensing Bill was drafted. This Bill was passed by Parliament in April 1984 as the Atomic Energy Licensing Act (Act 304).
The objective of AELB's establishment is to ensure radiation and nuclear technology does not affect national and societal well being by not significantly affecting the public, environment and workers negatively. It is also to acquire, disseminate and generate knowledge to enhance radiation and nuclear safety, security and where appropriate safeguards.
