COURTESY CALL BY DR. GRETCHEN KALONJI OF UNESCO

PUTRAJAYA: 6 Sept 2012 – YB Datuk Haji Fadillah Yusof, Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation received a courtesy call by Professor Dr. Gretchen Kalonji, Assistant Director General for Natural Sciences, UNESCO this afternoon. Dr. Kalonji was accompanied by Academician Dato Ir. (Dr.) Lee Yee Cheong, Chairperson of the Governing Board of the International Science, Technology and Innovation Centre for South-South Cooperation under the auspices of UNESCO (ISTIC). The UNESCO Assistant Director General is currently on a working visit to Malaysia from 3rd until 7th September 2012.
During the hour-long meeting, they discussed on possible collaboration between UNESCO and Malaysia in priority areas such as ocean and water issues, biodiversity and preparedness for natural disasters. YB Datuk Fadillah Yusof briefed on the early warning system for natural disasters used in Malaysia and he expressed the Ministry’s interest in sharing experience and data in pre and post disaster management technologies with UNESCO.
They also discussed UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) programme, which falls under the ambit of the Science Subcommittee of the Malaysia National Commission for UNESCO (SKUM), which is led by MOSTI. Dr Kalonji welcomed Malaysia’s efforts and hoped that more areas in Malaysia will be earmarked under this programme.
Also present during the meeting were Dato’ Dr. Samsudin Tugiman, Director of ISTIC, Mr. Ho Koon Seng, Undersecretary of International Division MOSTI and Dr. Yoslan Nur, UNESCO Programme Specialist in Science Policy Studies.
