IoT COMMUNITY URGED TO COLLABORATE IN PRODUCING MARKET SOLUTIONS

BUKIT JALIL, August 24, 2015: The whole community involved in the implementation of internet of Things (IoT) should work together to come up with solutions for the market; Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Madius Tangau said. He said that IoT was not about a single technology run by single players; in fact, it is not only about technology.

“IoT requires the re-architecting of various technologies and business approaches. Hence, it is important for the whole community to work hand-in-hand to provide market solutions. I am encouraged to see the formation of an IoT community as a platform for the industry to work together,” he said when launching the Malaysia IoT Week (MyIoT Week) 2015, here today. Present were Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) Deputy Secretary-General (Policy) Dato’ Dr Mohd Azhar Hj Yahya, MOSTI Deputy Secretary-General (Science) Dr Zulkifli Mohamed Hashim and MIMOS Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Abdul Wahab Abdullah.

Madius said that strategic implementation of IoT is expected to contribute RM9.5 billion to Malaysia’s gross national income (GNI) BY 2020, AND rm42.5 billion by 2025. IoT is expected to create more than 14,000 new high-skilled jobs, and it is forecast that more than 200 SME companies will benefit from IoT by 2020.
IoT has been identified as one of the key technology areas in 11th Malaysia Plan (RMK11) to enhance the productivity of new knowledge-basedgrowthareas, namely; agriculture, logistics, healthcare and advanced manufacturing, he said.

“Looking at the revolutionary and disruptive nature of IoT, the community that is formed out of this (National IoT Strategic) Roadmap need to regularly meet and discuss. The consequences of IoT are manifold. Although IoT is fundamentally about communication among inanimate objects, deeper understanding of human nature and human needs will prepare us for a more practical, sustainable and advanced manufacturing, he said.
The minister said that through the National Science and Technology Policy and the National IoT Strategic Roadmap, MOSTI will promote both scientific and innovation activities among the community and intensify collaborations among the industry, government research institutions and the

academia.
MOSTI is an end-to-end organisation, in both departments and agencies, which can lead the deployment of the IoT in Malaysia. In addition to MIMOS, the industry would be able to engage with CyberSecurity Malaysia , SIRIM and Standards Malaysia for the industrialisation of IoT, he said.

The Minister said that for industry funding, his ministry’s portfolio includes Malaysia Venture Capital Management (MAVCAP), Malaysia Debt Venture (MDV), Malaysia Technology Development Corporation (MTDC) and industry development funding mechanism such as Pre-Comm and CRDF. MOSTI is committed to the success of IoT in Malaysia, he said.

He said that MOSTI would assist the lot industry in facilitating technology and innovation development, with the establishment of a focal point for IoT Malaysia’s ecosystem as the first step.

During the same event, Madius also launched the Big Data IoT Technology Accelerator (BITX) Lab, an open innovation laboratory that provides end-to-end service necessary technologies for IoT applications and services.

Abdul Wahab said that the newly-launched laboratory would encourage the industry to work together in one central point to facilitate the exchange of ideas and development of innovative solutions. The laboratory would also enable the industry to showcase their IoT ideas, prototypes and proof of concept, he said.

“The lab should serve as a technology reference centre and facilities open innovation activities among industries, academia and government research institutions,” he said.

Abdul Wahab said that Intellectual Properties generated by MIMOS are meant to be shared with the industry. He said: “MIMOS will provide patented technologies and technological assistance through our facilities to help enhance the country’s comparative advantage and to further accelerate innovation activities of the local R&D communities. The industry should exploit our research outputs to gain competitive edge in the global arena”.
