Kuala Lumpur, 4 June 2014 : The Department of Standards Malaysia (DSM) today exchanged a document with SME Corp. Malaysia (SME Corp) for the implementation of the National Standards Compliance Programme (NSCP) which includes capacity building and promotional activities in standardisation. Witnessed by YAB Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak – in the presence of Puan Fadilah Baharin, Director General of DSM and Dato’ Hafsah Hashim, CEO of SME Corp on the 1st day of the 17th SME Innovation Showcase (SMIDEX) held at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today.

There is a need for more collaborative efforts with sector specific agencies and associations, tocreate a culture of quality amongst SMEs, through adoption of standards. Through NSCP, we set up a helpdesk at the ORC, SME Corp. Malaysia with the dual objectives are to gain a better undersanding of the issues (if any) faced by them in complying to standards and to encourage their inputs to develop new relevant standards,” said Puan Fadilah Baharin.

NSCP aims to provide a one stop center for national reference on standards compliance, especially to orientate Malaysian SMEs on quality standards, which will help them achieve new level of competency in both local and regional markets. Many incentives in the form of advisory, fiscal incentives and information dessimination have been introduced to help SMEs understand and adopt standards.

With greater participation, I believe, the adoption of standards will be greater, which will ultimately provide SMEs a competitive edge in today’s dynamic marketplace. This will have a ripple effect, raising consumer confidence in companies and brands that offer quality, standardised products and services”, Puan Fadilah Baharin added.

The soft launch of NSCP was on 12th November 2013 while at today, a signing of the plaque by YAB PM to commemorate the official launch of NSCP. A study conducted with more than 13%of Malaysian SMEs suggest that the perceived value of standards and its benefits are very low. Through NSCP and many proactive initiatives in the next 1-3 years, Standards Malaysia and SME Corp, under the document exchange will help SMEs appreciate the economic value of standards and also educate them on various incentives and financial support available towards adoption.
