NAY PYI TAW, Myanmar (April 26, 2012) : Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Maximus Ongkili met his counterpart Myanmar Minister of Science and Technology, U Aye Myint, today to discuss possible areas where the two countries can form collaborations in science and technology.
During the meeting held at the administrative capital of Nay Pyi Taw, the two discussed collaboration and sharing of expertise including in R&D in ICT, biotechnology and industrial technology.

The meeting was part of the trade mission led by Dr Ongkili to promote the Malaysian ICT, biotechnology and renewable energy sectors to Myanmar from 25 to 28 April 2012. The mission is a follow-up to the visit by the Prime Minister to Myanmar recently.“The Myanmar government is aggressively liberalising trade and increasing engagement, thus opening opportunities to regional economies including Malaysia. These efforts are attracting a growing international audience following political changes and transformation taking place internally.

“This trade mission is to provide the platform for Malaysian science and technology companies to continuously engage the Myanmar private sectors,” said Dr Ongkili.

He added that the expansion of cities, economic zones, business community as well as consumer market in Myanmar would create a demand for a more sophisticated range of technological products and services, which could be fulfilled by the participating Malaysian companies.

The 54-member delegation comprises government officials and representatives from the private sector. A business session and networking meetings will be held at the Traders Hotel in Yangon on Friday (27th April 2012), where 30 Myanmar companies are expected to participate.
