KUALA LUMPUR, NOVEMBER 6, 2012 – Twenty-five innovatorswere awarded with various major innovation awards during the WIF-KL Innovation Awards Nite held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) today.

The presentation ceremony was in conjunction with the staging of the World Innovation Forum Kuala Lumpur (WIF-KL) 2012 which was jointly organised by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia (YIM) from November 3 – 7, 2012.

Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Maximus Johnity Ongkili, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, presented the awards to the winners at the event which was also attended by approximately 1,800 of the forum participants from 50 countries.

The WIF-KL Innovation Awards is a presentation of major awards to recognise innovative and creative efforts performed by enterprises, grassroots, schools, universities, youths, technologists and scientists, just to list a few.

“This occasion is the first of its kind held with the combination of 12 Innovation Awards for the purpose of giving recognition to our local inventors”, said the minister.

Besides that, the awards were in recognition for the generation of new ideas, innovations and products by harnessing science and technology which impact the nation’s economic development and societal well being.

Ongkili said, “The Government’s recognition, along with the various incentives for the inventors, are aimed to encourage and boost the confidence of our inventors to continue with even greater zeal to create innovative products and hence, contribute to our country’s wealth“.

Some of the award categories that were presented were:
1.    NATIONAL INNOVATION AWARDS
2.    NATIONAL YOUNG SCIENTIST AWARD
3.    NATIONAL TECHNOLOGIST AWARD
4.    MOST INNOVATIVE INFORMATION SECURITY COMPANY OF THE YEAR
5.    MOST INNOVATIVE INFORMATION SECURITY PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR
6.    BIO INNOVATION AWARDS
7.    CIPTA AWARDS
8.    GRASSROOTS INNOVATORS AWARDS

Winners of the National Innovation Awards received RM50,000, a trophy and a certificate each (products and services categories), RM20,000, a trophy and a certificate (grassroots category) and RM10,000, a trophy and a certificate (schools category) respectively.

As for the National Young Scientists Award, the winner received RM20,000, a trophy and a certificate and while the winner of the National Technologist Award received RM10,000, a trophy and a certificate.

The best grassroots innovators discovered by YIM and MOSTI during the Jejak Inovasi expedition done across the country recently received RM10,000 for each of the open, youth and women categories.  Three winners were picked for the family category with each of them receiving RM1,000.

Meanwhile, winners of the Bio Innovations received RM4,000 with plaque and a certificate (Biotechnology Innovation of the year), RM3,000 with plaque and a certificate (most Innovative Award and Most Most Promising Innovation Award) and RM2,000 with plaque and a certificate to the Woman Bio Innovator of the year award.
