BACKGROUND
Nuclear technology plays an important role in various socioeconomic sectors of the country today, especially in the industrial sector, health, food and agriculture, water management and environmental protection.
To strengthen the use of this technology, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), YB Chang Lih Kang launched the National Nuclear Technology Policy (DTNN) 2030 on 20 September 2023. DTNN 2030 is the first strategic initiative of the Malaysian Government to mainstream the peaceful use of nuclear technology towards enhancing the competitiveness of the industry, strengthening the well-being of the people and conserving natural resources and the environment.
The implementation of DTNN 2030 under the governance of MOSTI which acts as the ministry that leads the execution of this policy and formulates development related to nuclear science and technology. The Malaysian Nuclear Agency (Nuklear Malaysia) acts as a coordinating agency for national cooperation platforms including strategic projects related to nuclear technology.
In line with that, Nuklear Malaysia is also entrusted as the lead for the National Nuclear Technology Technical Committee, with technical expert members from relevant government agencies, state-based institutions, regulators, the private sector and academicians. This committee is responsible for coordinating, analysing and advising on technical aspects of nuclear technology in implementing DTNN 2030.
