Simulated Cyber Attacks In Virtual ‘War-Game’ Environment

KUALA LUMPUR, (08 September 2016) – Cyber Range Malaysia, a virtual environment used for cyber technology development and cyber warfare training launched by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation today.

“With the launch of Cyber Range Malaysia, organizations can now utilize state-of-the-art facilities to simulate cyber-attacks. This testing and validating of their systems should result in greater resilience of their critical network infrastructure and operations. Cyber Range Malaysia utilises technologies similar to some of the largest cyber ranges around the world such as the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency National Range.” said YB. Datuk Seri Panglima Madius Tangau, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation.

Cyber Range Malaysia was developed under a public-private collaboration among CyberSecurity Malaysia, the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), and Cyber Intelligence Sdn. Bhd.

The establishment of Cyber Range Malaysia also provides an education and training platform for Malaysia to introduce Certified Cyber Defender Associate (CCDA) courses for network administrators, information security officers and C-level information technology professionals. According to Minister, YB. Datuk Seri Panglima Madius Tangau, MOSTI’s agency – CyberSecurity Malaysia – targets to train and certify 10,000 cyber security professionals by 2020 because it is vital to develop a strong pool of cyber security talent in order to build a dynamic cyber security eco-system that can support Malaysia’s transformation into a high income digital economy.

“With Cyber Range Malaysia, we hope to encourage more to join the profession as well as enable cyber security professionals to hone their skills and stay a step ahead in the ever-evolving cyber security landscape.” The Minister added.

The Cyber Range Malaysia is developed by CyberSecurity Malaysia in collaboration with IIUM, a premier Global Islamic University; and Cyber Intelligence Sdn. Bhd., a home-grown cyber security solution and service provider.

YBhg. Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr. Zaleha Kamaruddin, Rector of International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) said: “the collaboration between CyberSecurity Malaysia and IIUM’s has resulted in the formation of the CSM-IIUM Cyber Security Center of Excellence (CoE), where Cyber Range Malaysia is one of its product. IIUM is proud to host Cyber Range Malaysia that will churn out Malaysian Cyber Defenders to protect our country’s organisations and enterprises network, through its training and services. This will eventually lead to our nation’s strategic initiative on self-reliance.”

YB. Datuk Seri Panglima Madius Tangau, Minister of Science, Technology & Innovation officiated the launching ceremony today at the Kulliyyah of Information and Communication Technology (KICT), IIUM Campus, Gombak Selangor, Malaysia.
