MALAYSIA AND MYANMAR CAN FORM STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP IN SEVERAL KEY AREAS

YANGON, Myanmar (April 28, 2012): Malaysia and Myanmar could form strategic partnerships in several key areas such as developing new biopharmaceuticals and exploring high value agriculture biotechnology products and services.  

The strategic partnership was mooted by Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation   Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Maximus Johnity Ongkili when opening the Business Session of the Specialised Trade Mission  to Myanmar for the ICT, Biotechnology and Renewable Energy sectors here on Friday (April 27).

He led a delegation of 50 private companies to the trade mission to Myanmar from April 25 to 28. The Business Session was well attended by more than 50 Myanmar companies. 

“In the area of renewable energy, Myanmar and Malaysian private sectors could initiate small hydro electricity generation and solar photovoltaic system installation which could progress further to solar thermal and biofuel production,” said Dr Ongkili said in his address.

He expressed confidence that Malaysia’s transformational development agenda that emphasised on knowledge and technological based strategies could mutually benefit Malaysia and Myanmar. Dr Ongkili also highlighted programmes that were in line with this, including Digital  Malaysia, Bioeconomy Initiative Malaysia and the  new Renewable Energy Act 2011. 

At the business session, Dr Ongkili also witnessed the signing of two Memorandum of Understanding. 

The MoU between Bio Collagen Technologies of Malaysia and Access Spectrum Trading Company Limited of Myanmar, aims at securing  the supply of medical devices to private and government hospitals in Myanmar. Access Spectrum will be appointed to promote, distribute and market collagen, fibrogel and bone implant devices in Myanmar. 

The MoU between Zenotec Pharma of Malaysia  and Zizawa Healthcare  of Myanmar is for the importation and distribution of Zenotech’s  healthcare products into  Myanmar.

ICT delegates from Malaysia included representatives from 1Machine Technology Group, eProtea & Finexus Group, SecureMetric Technology, Triaset, Y Us, Comintel and RedHot Media. Malaysian biotechnology companies included All Cosmos Industries, Bio-Collagen Technologies, Pathlab, Biofact Life, Biotech Diagnostics, DNA LAB, Pharma-Bioscience, Zenotech Biotechnology and RB Biotech, while in the energy sector they include Maxim Energy Resources.

A total of 40 individual business meetings were successfully held between the Malaysian companies and their Myanmar counterparts.

Dr Ongkili later paid a courtesy call to Chief Minister of the Yangon Region H.E. U Myint Swe. Also present were Minister of Foreign Affairs, Electric Power and Industry, Minister of Finance and Minister of Social Welfare of the Yangon Region.   

H.E. U Myint Swe invited Malaysian companies to invest in Yangon, taking advantage of the vibrant business activities in Yangon, which income earnings were twice Myanmar’s national average. 

He said the Yangon Regional Government was keen on digital technology and invited Malaysia to assist in setting up e-government services. He also invited the Malaysian private sector to invest in the Thilawa Economic Zone.

Expressing thanks, Dr Ongkili said the private sector should be facilitated to identify opportunities in Yangon to create collaborations that would spur science and technology – based businesses, and the trade mission would significantly contribute to this effort.
