USING SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY TO COMBAT TRANSNATIONAL CRIME

BEIJING, 24 September 2012 – YBhg. Dato’ Dr. Madinah Mohamad, Secretary General of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation Malaysia, attended a high level meeting between Malaysian and Chinese officials and experts on cooperation to combat transnational crimes at the Ministry of Public Security in Beijing this morning.
The meeting served as follow-up to the Agreement on Cooperation in Combating Transnational Crime between Malaysia and the People’s Republic of China which was signed on 2nd August 2012.  Chinese Vice- Minister of Public Security, H.E. Meng Hongwei also attended the meeting.
Amongst the key areas discussed during the meeting were identifying cooperation activities and programs in counter-terrorism assistance; narcotics control; combating trafficking of persons and dangerous materials; and cybercrime investigation. Both sides agreed in principle that amongst the areas of cooperation that could be implemented by the respective agencies of both countries to combat transnational crime include exchange of information; exchange of experiences and cooperation in technology and equipment.
After the meeting, the Malaysian senior officials and experts were briefed at the Command Centre of the Beijing Xicheng District which has round the clock surveillance and governs incident response for the entire district.
