His visit to the Indonesia Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) included a meeting with high-level officials of the Interim CTI Regional Secretariat (CTI-RS) led by ministry’s Secretary-General Ir.Dr. Gellwyn Jusuf . The 3rd Ministerial Meeting held here in October 2011, decided for Malaysia to chair the CTI Council of Ministers and to set up of the permanent regional secretariat.
Dr Ongkili’s visit was also to provide leadership direction on the CTI implementation roadmap for 2012-2013, where he and Bapak Sharif discussed the challenges facing the CTI and the transition plan towards the establishment of the regional secretariat office in Manado.
Dr. Ongkili was briefed on the CTI progress and he also provided guidance and advice on issues and concerns relating to the establishment of the permanent secretariat and proposed follow up action to ensure early realisation.
Regional Secretariat Executive Chairman Dr. Sudirman Saad expressed that it was crucial to make the strategic first move as CTI-RS was ready for the transition. As such, the meeting between the regional secretariat and the new chairman was viewed an important milestone to seek proper guidance towards achieving the roadmap.
Dr. Ongkili also called on the Minister of Research and Technology Prof. Dr. Ir. Gusti Muhammad Hatta to discuss existing cooperation in science and technology. This included the MOUs by the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) and Meteorological Department of Malaysia with Indonesia on the development of e-voting application system in Indonesia, as well as cooperation in the reinstallation of tsunami buoy in the waters of Pulau Rondo.
Both ministers agreed to having closer collaborations and joint researches in the areas of natural products, biotechnology, cyber security, marine and fisheries and food security. The joint researches included in the breeding and production of the exotic fresh water fish ‘empurau’ and ‘kelah’ in Kalimantan, as well as R&D on herbs of Borneo.
Also present at the meetings were Malaysian Ambassador to Indonesia, H.E. Dato’ Syed Munshe Afdzaruddin Syed Hassan and National Oceanography Directorate, Undersecretary Prof. Dr. Nor Aieni Mokhtar.
