KUALA LUMPUR (9 September 2015) – CyberSecurity Malaysia announced plans to boost the number of cyber security specialists in Malaysia by accelerating capacity building and capability development. It is targeting to realize 14,000 cyber security specialists or a ratio of one cyber security specialist for every 1,500 Malaysians by 2020 to meet the surging demand. As of August 2015, Malaysia has 4,711 knowledge workers in information security.

Speaking at the CSM-ACE 2015 Gala Dinner to honour Cyber Security Awards 2015 recipients, YB Datuk Dr Abu Bakar Mohamad Diah, Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation said that ICT is an imperative enabler that will increase productivity through innovation, thereby enhancing competitiveness and wealth creation towards a knowledge economy. One of the key thrusts of the 11th Malaysia Plan (RMK 11) is to further develop and strengthen Malaysia’s capabilities and expertise in ICT.

“Cyber Security has been identified as one of the technology focus areas within ICT sector in RMK 11, apart from digital content, software development and testing, Internet of Things (IoT), data centres, cloud services and big data analytics. We want to move Malaysia from being a technology consumer to a technology producer,” said Abu Bakar.

Chairman of the Board of Directors of CyberSecurity Malaysia General Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Panglima Mohd Azumi Bin Mohamed (Retired) said that in response to an acute shortage of cyber security talent pool, Cybersecurity Malaysia recently established strategic partnerships with several internationally accredited institutions with key focus areas in Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERTs), Information Security Management Systems (ISMS), Business Continuity Management (BCM), Wireless Technology, Penetration Testing, SCADA, and Digital Forensics.
