PUTRAJAYA, 5 SEPTEMBER 2017 – Datuk Seri Dr. Mohd Azhar bin Haji Yahaya, Secretary General of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of Malaysia was elected as President of the Governing Council of NAM S&T Centre during the 14th Governing Council Meeting of the Centre for Science and Technology of the Non-Aligned and Other Developing Countries (NAM S&T Centre) held in Putrajaya on 5 September 2017. This is a major recognition of Malaysia’s contribution in the field of science and technology in the international arena.
This meeting was attended by 28 delegates from 16 countries comprising of Ambassadors/ Head of Ministry/ Department/ Agency of Science and Technology in the respective NAM S&T member countries and representatives from the Embassy of NAM S&T Member Countries in Malaysia.
The NAM S&T Centre is an intergovernmental organisation consisting of 48 non-aligned and other developing countries located in various region of the world that covers Africa, Asia, Middle East, America and Europe. The Centre is given a mandate to promote the fullest possible and mutually beneficial technological collaboration among scientists and technologists and scientific organizations from among the member countries.
Malaysia’s involvement in NAM S&T Centre started in 1994 when the country became a member to the Centre. Since then, Malaysia has played an active role by jointly organising activities with the Centre such as workshops and training courses in the country. With Datuk Seri Dr. Mohd Azhar bin Haji Yahaya as President of the Governing Council of NAM S&T Centre for the next four years, Malaysia is expected to play a bigger role in the organisation’s activities to promote scientific and technical cooperation among the member countries.
