MINISTER LAUNCHES MALAYSIAN PAVILION AT BIO INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION 2012 IN BOSTON

BOSTON, Massachusetts (June 20, 2012) – Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Maximus Ongkili launched the Malaysian Pavilion at the Bio International Convention 2012 exhibition which showcases the country’s capabilities and potential in biotechnology.
The Malaysian Pavilion is jointly-organised by MOSTI agency BiotechCorp and MIDA for the first time signifying a “Blue Ocean strategy” to consolidate the efforts in attracting foreign direct investment in biotechnology to Malaysia.
Also present were Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister DatukPatinggi Tan Sri Dr. Alfred JabuNumpang, BiotechCorp CEO Dato’ MohdNazlee Kamal, Terengganu State Secretary YB Dato’ HjMazlanNgah, Sabah Economic Development and Investment Authority (SEDIA) president/CEO Datuk Dr MohdYaakubJohari, East Coast Economic Region Council (ECERDC) CEO Dato’ Dr JebasingamIsaace John and Deputy Secretary General (Science) of MOSTI Prof DatinPaduka Dr KhatijahMohdYusoff.
The Minister also witnessed the exchange of documents of collaboration between BiotechCorp and global and local biotechnology partners. They consisted:
  • Exchange of collaboration instrument between Terengganu State Government, BiotechCorp, East Coast Economic Region Development Centre (ECERDC) and GEVO Inc to facilitate investment at the Kertih Bio Polymer Park. GEVO plans to set-up a commercial plant to produce carbohydrates and isobutanol from woody biomass with an estimated investment of RM1.65 billion.
  • Memorandum of collaboration between BiotechCorp and Quintiles Inc for the development of a clinical research supportive ecosystem
  • Joint Clinical Trial and License and Distribution agreement between CCM Biopharma and PanGen Biotech for the commercialisation of EPO in BiotechCorp
  • Exchange of documents between KENS FineMedTech&Delphax with Electrocore for the incorporation of a special purpose company in Malaysia to undertake worldwide manufacturing operation and spearheading further research and development activity

Exchange of documents between Granulab and Electrocore for the incorporation of a special purpose company to undertake market distribution in the Asia-Pacific Rim

At the event, the letter of the offer of BioNexus status from the Government of Malaysia was also handed to Darden AquasciencesSdnBhd and Lobster Aqua Technologies SdnBhd for a US$600 million investment to undertake a lobster aquaculture project in Sabah.
The Minister is leading a delegation of more than 80 members to the Bio International Convention 2012 held in Boston from June 17 -21.
