KUALA LUMPUR, August 25, 2015: Malaysia is committed to be an active, contributing member of the ASEAN Internet of Things (IoT) community, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Madius Tangau said, here, today.

Madius said that IoT would lead to higher awareness of our surroundings and would bring about more cooperation, standardisation and harmonisation. “This is something positive, not only for Malaysia but for the region, if not the rest of the world,” he said.

“The enormous opportunities created by IoT should benefit all in ASEAN member countries,” he said when launching the ASEAN IoT Innovation Forum, the main event of the Malaysia IoT Week (MyIoT 2015), organised by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI).

The minister said that apart from a vibrant investment climate, skilled workforce and a thriving environment for innovation, the country could offer the Malaysian IoT ecosystem as a value-based partner to global IoT industry.

“I see huge potentials in IoT, and I’m sure you do, too. But only a successful implementation of IoT strategies can lead to positive impact. The (National IoT Strategic) Roadmap has underlined clear strategies on how IoT can boost the economy by creating new business enterprises and skilled-job opportunities for our citizens,” he said.

According to industry forecast, IoT is expected to boost the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector in Malaysia by more than fourfold by 2025, which will create opportunities for more high-income jobs.

During the event, Madius also launched the Collaborative Open Innovation Network, (COIN), a multi-party network of government organisations, industry players and higher learning institutions, established by MOSTI to build on the strengths of existing organisations.

Madius said that at this juncture, COIN involves the collaboration of 12 agencies from the Prime Minister’s Department, the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia, the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Finance and MOSTI.

He said strategic alliances in various sectors were needed to realise IoT in Malaysia. He said: “An Open Innovation Network promotes the creation of positive value linkages that will enable multiple organisations to learn, grow and gain from each other’s knowledge and experiences.”

The minister added that IoT had been identified as one of the key technology areas under the 11th Malaysia Plan to enhance the productivity of several key sectors such as agriculture, logistics, healthcare, environment, halal industry and advanced manufacturing.

He also said that MOSTI would establish a Steering Committee with MIMOS as the
Implementation Secretariat to ensure an effective execution of the National IoT Strategic Roadmap. An implementation plan is currently being developed to chart out key action plans and focus areas to kick-start the proliferation of IoT as a key industry, he said.

MOSTI Deputy Secretary-General (Policy) Dato’ Dr Mohd Azhar Hj Yahaya in his welcoming remark at the event said that since the launch of the National IoT Strategic Roadmap last month, MOSTI had been engaging with businesses, industry experts, the universities and relevant government agencies to gain better insights into the kinds of applications that people truly need, so that the IoT introduced by the government would have the capabilities to deliver positive experiences to all stakeholders.

“MOSTI will assist the industry in facilitating the technology and innovation development, which will be done through the establishment of COIN,” he said.
